Course Winner Has Conditions Right For Another Successful Run
It's coming up to thirty years this November since Frankie Dettori rode the first flat winner on Southwell's Fibresand, and what applied then still does now, with it being vital that a horse can go on the surface. AWA BOMBA certainly has that ability as shown when winning here over six furlongs back in March, putting over three lengths between him and Champagne Mondays. He had a break of three and a half months after that but returned to run reasonable races on turf at Leicester and Nottingham and then a place on the all-weather at Kempton.
His best recent effort, however, was here at Southwell a fortnight ago when fifth, beaten four and a half lengths to Queen of Kalahari, who goes in the last. The latter had won her previous race by five lengths, whilst the second, Requited, and third, Catapult have come out and won again since. That, in context, looks top form.
Today's race sees Awa Bomba, a son of Heeraat, move up to seven furlongs, but his style of racing, where he often dwells before running on, can actually see an improvement. Whilst his sire was extra speedy, his dam, Nut, has bred Captain Caroline who won over a mile and a half at Wolverhampton. The gelding also wears a hood for the first time, goes off the same mark of 63 as in his last race and has apprentice Darragh Keenan taking off 3lb. The latter has 54 winners to his name, rode Kingsley Klarion to victory a week ago and is a highly impressive eight from 33 at the course.
It is a typical Southwell 12-runner handicap and therefore has many possible winners. ESPRIT DE CORPS is favourite and usually runs well but hasn't won in 24 races, including four here at Southwell. GREMOBOY has a similar profile, though the only win of his career was over course and distance and the progeny of his sire, Mayson, is 22% at Southwell. He is 18/1 with Bet365. LIAMBA, was impressive on har last visit here but has been off for four months and has a career-high mark of 70 to defy, 7lb up on her last win. At 11/2 with Bet365, Awa Bomba looks worth an investment.
