Conditions Just Right For Another Win

Some horses seem to go on all grounds, at different distances and at all courses but even they will have optimum conditions and CAMACHO CHIEF definitely finds his at Haydock this afternoon. He contests the Betfair Exchange Be Friendly Handicap, named after the Peter O'Sullevan owned winner of what is now the Sprint Cup, 50 years ago. The gelding has raced 20 times, all at sprint distances, winning five, rarely running a bad race and usually there or thereabouts. Significantly, however, he has competed three times over five furlongs when the going was described as "soft" and won all three by an average of over two lengths - significant over the minimum trip.

The Michael Dods’ trained gelding has actually run really well in his last two outings. He was beaten under four lengths both times by stablemate Dakota Gold at York in ultra-competitive events over six and five and a half furlongs on good ground. Today he is back to five on the soft, is dropped 1 lb from his last run and wears cheek-pieces for the second time, and the first since October, 2017 when he was an unlucky, hampered runner-up to Big Les at Pontefract.

Arecibo opposes on 3 lbs worse terms than when under three lengths in front of Camacho Chief in the latest York event but he got the race run to suit and was in the favoured middle of the course to produce his career-best form. BROKEN SPEAR is best on BTO ratings and the progeny of his sire Pastoral Pursuits are around 12% at the course and on the ground. Camacho Chief’s stablemate INTENSE ROMANCE won this last year, goes on the ground, wears cheek-pieces for the first time and shares a liking for the course with the other progeny of her sire Intense Focus which shows a just under 30% win rate.

At Bet365's 5/1 Camacho Chief looks an each-way bet to nothing in what is now an eight-horse race.
