Progressive Hannon Three-Year-Old Ready To Strike Again
An improving horse can be a source of successful investments, especially if stepping up in class and underrated by the layers, and we have one that can fit that description in the Celebration Mile Stakes today. BEAT LE BON, a handsome son of Wootton Bassett (progeny four from seven at Goodwood), has won his last three races, all handicaps, and steps up in class today. His first season was slightly disappointing when, constantly backed into favourite (showing the regard in which he was held) he was placed rather than getting his head in front.
He started to put things right when reintroduced to the track in March, winning easily when massive odds-on and was then down the field again at Newbury in a class 2 handicap. The success began here at Goodwood at the end of May when he overcame a troubled run to get home by a couple of lengths from Jack's Point. That was over seven furlongs, but he showed how much a mile suits him when beating Vale Of York over course and distance three weeks ago in the Golden Mile. That was a significant run as that latter horse ran an absolute cracker on Thursday when going down in a photo in a Class 2 handicap at York off a mark of 104, 3lbs up on his defeat to Beat Le Bon. The third horse, Escobar had won his previous, again a York Class 2.
William Haggas' SKARDU looks a worthy favourite with no stepping up in class involved. He has been 3rd, 4th and 4th in his last three races, all Group 1s and a win would not be undeserved. DUKE OF HAZZARD is ultra-game and though also taking a step up in class deserves to be in this company. He overcame being hampered and blocked to get up late in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes here at the start of the month to beat Turjomaan a head. The latter's previous runs were, however in all-weather novice events.
In a race to be savoured, Beat Le Bon's 4/1 might look value at about 2.10pm.
