Quick Return To Get A Double For Sprinter
Despite winning over seven furlongs on Newcastle's all-weather surface in the Spring, it seems that SIMBA SAMBA has found his optimum conditions to be a sound surface over the minimum trip. He gets these this afternoon at Yarmouth in the MansionBet Beaten By A Head Handicap, though it is hoped the winning distance will be in excess of that margin. He had a breathing operation in April after disappointing over a mile, again at Newcastle, and was reintroduced to racing by trainer Phil McBride here at Yarmouth over six furlongs in June. On heavy ground, he did well to be beaten just over a length and then ran poorly returned to seven furlongs.
Put over five furlongs on good to firm over today's course and distance in the middle of July he was beaten by a length and a half and then went one better last Thursday when getting the better of MONARCH MAID by three-quarters of a length on conditions replicated today. The latter opposes on the same terms and with ex-Irish apprentice Dylan Hogan claiming 5lbs on Simba Samba there is no reason to expect a reversal.
DAHIK, sent down the M1 by Michael Easterby, looks the biggest danger. His form, with a string of 0s in front of his name doesn't look great and his latest effort, when 10th of 11 at Carlisle doesn't seem to give much encouragement. He was beaten less than four lengths there and his run could just indicate a return to the form that saw him win by five lengths for Roger Varian in 2017. His mark of 55 today is 26lbs lower than 15 months ago.
Simba Samba is just under 2/1 on the exchanges and that looks fair.
