Conditions Just Right For Six-Year-Old To Get Another Win
If she hadn't run eighth in her last race, SECRET RETURN might well be around the 4/1 mark in the Samworth Brothers Handicap over a mile at Bath this afternoon, rather than the double odds that can be found. Even a closer examination of that placing is not totally discouraging as, going off at 33/1 in a better event than this evening's, she was beaten just half a dozen lengths on Chelmsford's all-weather surface by Dalaalaat, with some useful three-year-olds in the field. Prior to that she had been second, though well beaten by Infanta Isabella at Newbury, a horse that then went on to be beaten less than a couple of lengths in a Class 3 at Goodwood.
That Newbury run was off a mark of 79 and she is down to 77 today, a rating off which she won at Windsor last Autumn. Devon trainer Paul George sends her up from Devon and is three from eight here in the last five years, whilst the progeny of her sire Roderic O'Connor produce wins at the course that are 59% better than expected, according to Before The Off. The soft ground won't be a problem as she has raced eight times on ground with the word “soft” in its description, resulting in two wins, three seconds and a third.
REGIMENTED looks a threat but was beaten two lengths by Secret Return in Infanta Isabella's race and re-opposes on the same terms. David O'Meara sends TUKHOOM, his only representative here, on the long journey from North Yorkshire and the gelding, who won at Pontefract ten days ago has just a 2lb rise for that success which looks more (or less) than reasonable. MERWEB bounced right back to form at Lingfield earlier this week when narrowly beaten by Lothario. That was after a gelding operation and a break, so he is a clear danger off the same mark. He might just be better on an all-weather surface, though.
At 15/2, Secret Return is the bet and is being backed.
