Appleby Three Year Old To Strike On Handicap Debut
Charlie Appleby sends the already gelded AUXERRE to Kempton this evening for his first try in a handicap and it looks like it could be a successful introduction.
The three-year-old made his racecourse debut only this season at Newmarket in the third week in June and nearly justified his 3/1 odds when coming home second to Red Starlight after starting slowly and running green. He justified the impression of being a decent type when running at Haydock a couple of weeks later, staying on strongly to beat Msayyan five lengths with subsequent Thirsk winner Juthoor back in fourth. Reintroduced at Chelmsford last month after a 76-day break and ridden by this evening's pilot William Buick, he won a novice event from Gaudi who again has gone on to win since.
Team Appleby must have felt there is more to come than was shown in that event and the horse is fitted with cheekpieces today. He is best on BTOPlus+ regular figures and gets four positives, including Appleby's 30% success rate when running horses in handicaps for the first time.
