Conditions Just Right For The Field's Most Experienced Runner
On the day before the Lord Mayor's Show, there are inspections and heavy ground at three of today’s meetings, so it is probably best to stick to the all weather for investments. It was in this race a year ago that QAFFAL last won and things look right for him to produce a repeat today. In that event twelve months ago, he prevailed in a photo finish from TAKE THE HELM and goes off the same mark of 88 today, carrying just a pound more in the handicap. Take The Helm is seven pounds worse off than last year. Qaffal's partner then, Ryan Moore, is substituted by Nathan Evans who has ridden him in just over half of his races since that victory, so knows him well, and the horse is down one pound from his last three runs. The best of these was a close third over this one mile trip at Lingfield where he would have been even closer but for being trapped behind runners a furlong out. BTOPlus+ puts him third on regular and speed ratings and does point out a negative in jockey Evans' blank from eight over course and distance. This is completely offset by the 14 positives he gets, however, which include the horse's 170% better than expected at the distance, his three from 11 on Polytrack and jockey Evans' nine from 54 over other distances at Chelmsford. ABLE JACK is next best on BTO but the 2/1 about Qaffal looks fair.
