Maiden Hurdle Looks There For The Taking Over Two Miles
When Evan Williams saddled up MONBEG OSCAR at Sandown in the second week in December, he looked, on all known form, to have a winner on his hands. The six year old, an Irish import from point to point, had run four races in the UK under rules and had performed well in all. The longest distance he had tackled was an extended two miles two at Market Rasen last winter, when he was second to Master Of Irony. He then ran at Sandown on his seasonal debut in November, when, over two miles, he was runner up to Maria's Benefit, a horse winning the second race in a subsequent four timer. That was an event with some decent types in it, such as Garo De Juilly and Wenyerreadyfreddie and as a result, Monbeg was made favourite for the December Sandown event over the best part of three miles. Trading at 1.9 on Betfair at the two and a half marker, he looked like sluicing home but then emptied like an unblocked drain and finished sixth of eight to Holly Bush Henry. Back over an easy Ludlow two miles today, the gelding looks good; BTOPlus+ has him top of regular and speed ratings and gives him a couple of "Sire" positives including distance and racing right handed. COMRADE CONRAD, a son of Canford Cliffs, is next best but the 5/4 about Monbeg Oscar at Hills, Boylesports and Bet188 should be taken.
