Defi Du Seuil beat Un De Sceaux in a superb Betfair Tingle Creek Chase at Sandown, with Ascot now possibly on the agenda.
Philip Hobbs' Defi Du Seuil went off the 2/1 favourite but was pushed all the way by veteran Un De Sceaux under Paul Townend.
The 11-year-old was disputing things with Barry Geraghty's mount as they rounded the final turn although it was the younger of the two who pulled away after jumping the last.
However, Un De Sceaux refused to give up and closed to within a neck at the line. Waiting Patiently was three-quarters of a length back in third but Defi Du Seuil was the toast of the day, with connections feeling he is a progressive horse.
"He jumped beautifully and Barry thinks he will have learnt a bit from today - going that pace with Grade One horses," said Hobbs. "Touch wood he is very sound and has a fantastic attitude."
The Minehead handler refused to give too much away when asked abut his charge's next destination, adding: "I suppose the obvious race is the Clarence House at Ascot but at this stage we've not thought about it."
