Cornerstone Lad claimed the win in the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle to deny Buveur D'Air a third straight victory in the race.
Nicky Henderson's star Buveur D'Air had been the favourite to make it three successive wins in the Grade One contest but it was Cornerstone Lad that led from the front, and that advantage was extended to eight lengths with three flights left to jump.
Buveur D'Air did mount a late challenge to the leader but a mistake two out cost the defending champion ground and Cornerstone Lad was able to claim the victory by a short head.
There was some concern for Buveur D'Air after the race, with jockey Barry Geraghty confirming he suffered "a little cut on his coronary band" although he was hopeful it was nothing too serious.
Winning trainer Micky Hammond shared his concern for Buveur D'Air but was also delighted to see his charge claim what seemed an unlikely success.
Hammond said: "I'm obviously delighted - we didn't come here expecting to win. I hope Buveur D'Air is all right, as I saw Barry jump off him after the line.
"Buveur D'Air has always been a favourite of mine and so has Cornerstone Lad. It's a great team effort by everyone at home."
