Robert Walford says Walk In The Mill could target the Scottish National instead if he fails to get in the Aintree showpiece.
Walk In The Mill's chances of making the cut for the Randox Health Grand National are slim as he sits at number 48 in the list after this week's latest acceptance stage.
With around 40 runners normally on the card for the big Aintree contest, Walford's charge will have to wait for further withdrawals if he is to get in on the action on
The nine-year-old, who ironically had to pull out of the National last year on the day when he fell lame, won the Becher Chase over the Grand National fences in December and will fancy his chances of glory if he can get on the final list.
Walford, however, is not overly optimistic and says the Scottish version in Ayr on April 13 is the next best option.
He said: "He's well but he's no good thing to get in (the National). It's just one of those things. We need eight out - (but) we're training him for the race and he's in good form."
"If he doesn't get in we might run in the Scottish National, I suppose," he added.
