The 2018 Cheltenham Festival is fast approaching and the world's top horses and jockeys are fired up more than ever to impress.
Unfortunately, Ruby Walsh isn't part of these hyped up participants. Walsh has been one of the top guns at the Cheltenham for 11 straight years, but his recent injury, caused by the fall he had during the Punchestown race, poses a big threat to his participation in next year's Festival.
It doesn't look good for him as he's expected to be on the sidelines for months, following the second fall Walsh had during the card.
Despite his injury, the Irishman still managed to keep his composure as he answered the questions of the media a few hours after, before going on to reveal that he has suffered a fractured right tibia.
Dr Adrian McGoldrick later stated that that Walsh would be undergoing a CT scan to check if there are other injuries that resulted from the kick to the head that he also received.
According to the statement released by the Professional Jockey's Association (PJA), Walsh's estimated duration of recovery will take about 130 days. This is the usual amount of time that jockeys with fractured tibia fully recover but it means that the 38-year-old jockey would be on the sidelines until March 28.
Tony McCoy, former champion jockey and close friend of Walsh, says that the injured star texted him and shared that he was devastated. McCoy revealed that Walsh is currently at the lowest point of his life.
However, this doesn't mean that it's the end of the line for him as he's on the road to recovery. It sure is a big loss to the annual National Hunt meeting, as it looks unlikely to be back in time for the Festival - which will be held from March 13 to March 16.
Although its an unfortunate event that the Festival's participants should sympathise with, literally speaking, it will be a good thing for them. Knowing that a veteran jockey won't be riding will significantly increase their winning chances.
It's not only the jockeys who may benefit from this, but also potentially the punters. Some of the horses Walsh was due to ride, may see their prices drift in the run up to the Festival.

Knowing that there's still no official confirmation that Walsh is out in the next year’s Cheltenham Festival, it’s safe to say that there is still that possibility that he might yet participate.
