Connections have confirmed that Coneygree will undergo surgery to correct a minor respiratory problem on Thursday.
The 10-year-old finished last season strongly after coming home third at Punchestown, however, he has struggled to compete after coming back for the new term.
Coneygree was pulled up on his seasonal reappearance in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby on November 4, while he suffered a similar fate on his latest outing at Newbury on December 2.
Jockey Nico de Boinville was on board at Newbury and he reported that Coneygree was suffering from a respiratory problem.
Connections have now revealed that the veteran will need to go under the knife to try and correct the breathing issue and they are hopeful that he can come back fighting.
Sara Bradstock said: "He's going to go and have his soft palate cauterised on Thursday.
"He had a very bad soft palate as a baby and had a few wind operations, but obviously that was a while ago now and he just needs a bit of help with it again.
"He's come out of the race absolutely fine and fresh as a daisy, so I think we can be fairly sure that was the problem."
