Red Rum may be the only horse to have won three Grand Nationals but even the most famous horse in British racing history didn’t manage to win three on the spin.

That’s the piece of history that Tiger Roll bids to achieve in 2020’s Aintree Grand National. The 10-year-old is still relatively young in Grand National terms and he was an even more impressive winner in 2019 than he had been when narrowly holding on in 2018.

For a small horse, there’s no doubt that the biggest task facing the Gigginstown runner is the big weight he’s going to have to saddle. The handicapper must be rueing letting the gelding in lightly last year when rated just 9lb higher than his previous success, despite the front two pulling 11 lengths clear of the rest of the field.

That’s a mistake the assessor won’t be making twice and while his price of 5/1 with Ladbrokes looks fair on the face of it, it’s going to be a tough ask to carry top-weight over the National fences.

Each-way contenders for the race include Walk In The Mill who could hardly have been more impressive over the National fences in the Becher Chase back in December. That looked like a strong renewal of the National trial and the runner-up has come out and franked the form in fine fashion at Warwick subsequently.

Robert Walford’s stable star ran a fair race when fourth last year and he could be an each-way value option at around 20/1 given his 141 form figures over the National fences.

Pleasant Company is another interesting contender who catches the eye. He was only narrowly denied in 2018’s renewal by Tiger Roll and he gave the impression he was going to run a huge race in this event last year prior to unseating at the 27th obstacle.

While he’s not getting any younger, the 12-year-old’s price accounts for that in the market, widely available at 33/1 and it’s well worth forgiving his latest run when unsuited by a switch back to hurdles.

His trainer’s (Willie Mullins) only success in the race came with Hedgehunter back in 2005 but this son of Presenting gives the Irish Champion Trainer solid each-way claims if he turns up for another crack at the world’s most watched horse race.
