Flemington Park is the most famous racecourse in Australia and is the home of the Melbourne Cup. The 3200-metre contest is now the world’s richest handicap and attracts some of the best horses from around the globe.

Here is a look back through to the history books to identify the four most memorable Melbourne Cup races which have taken part at Flemington Park since 1861.

Rain Lover Destroys Field By Eight Lengths In 1968

One of the most destructive performances by a horse in the Melbourne Cup came in 1968 when Rain Lover prevailed by a margin of eight lengths. Given it is a handicap and every horse is weighted to have an equal chance, long margin victories in the Flemington Park feature contest are rare, however, Rain Lover was too good for his rivals once again as he defended his crown after also being successful in 1967.

Viewed Makes It Win Number 12 For Cups King In 2008

Just like Ginger McCain is synonymous with the Grand National in the UK, legendary Australian trainer Bart Cummings will forever be linked with the Melbourne Cup. McCain won the Grand National four times, largely down to the success of Red Rum. Cummings won the Melbourne Cup for the first time in 1965 and 43 years later he picked up his 12th success.

Viewed was the horse that produced the special moment, which will stay with those who were at Flemington Park that day forever. The race was a thriller as Viewed went head-to-head with Bauer in a close finish where a photo was required to separate the two horses. This proved to be the last victory in the race for the man known as Cups King in what was a memorable moment in the history of the turf contest.

Kingston Rule Smashes The Clock At Flemington Park In 1990

Kingston Rule followed in his father’s footsteps by doing something special himself in the 1990 Melbourne Cup as he won the race in a record time of 3:16:13. That time still stands today as the quickest any horse has run the Australian contest in Victoria. The horse retired a year later and had a very successful career in stud.

Makybe Diva Completes Historic Hat-Trick In 2005

In 2005 Makbye Diva became the first horse in Melbourne Cup history to win the race three times. The seven-year-old was required to carry a record 58kg to success as he had been victorious in 2003 and 2004. The hugely popular Australian horse was roared to victory by the majority of the 106,479 crowd at Flemington Park in what proved to be an expensive result for the bookmakers.

The latest chapter in the Melbourne Cup history books at Flemington Park could be written when the race returns for its latest renewal on Tuesday, 5th November.
