Nansaroy

(Unseated, Chepstow, 22/11/17)

Remains well treated, despite the mishap this day and while the market leader would have done well to beat an impressive winner in Ramses De Teillee, Mitch Bastyan's mount was going well when departing at the thirteenth. He was disputing second when blundering and although yet to win in eight attempts over fences, this capable seven-year-old has raced against strong opposition.

This was his first start in 193 days, so expect him to come on for that run and he should be well suited by winter ground.

Modernism

(Unplaced, Wolverhampton, 25/11/17)

Parked out wide having been badly drawn (11) and unable to get a breather when disappointing on Saturday. The well handicapped eight-year-old broke well and was steadied in the first furlong but couldn't gain an inside position. Has dropped to a very favourable mark (12lb below his win here in January) and should drop a few pounds more after this performance.

I caught up with the gelding's trainer Ian Williams afterwards and he told me: " Modernism was unsuited by being stuck out wide and could never get a breath.

“He has dropped a lot in the ratings and although this isn't a masterplan, don't lose faith with him because he'll probably win if you leave him out of calculations.

"He'll be another 3lb lower next time and, as always, will be doing his best."

Ice Cool Champs

(Winner, Uttoxeter, 26/11/17)

Relished the step up in trip on Sunday. Philip Hobbs' unexposed six-year-old was held up but made headway after the eighth. Made progress before three-out and led two-out, despite hitting that obstacle. Staying on strongly, he drew clear with the promise of more to come over similar trips.

This was a decent event, so keep with Ice Cool Champs over hurdles this term. He'll make a smashing chaser in time. He was previously unsuited by a slow pace when second in a 2m3f at Wetherby. Philip Hobbs' long distance traveller had finished second in a bumper before justifying strong support over hurdles at Hereford. Looked well treated off 122 on his handicap debut after a 223-day absence but unable to confirm Hereford form with Diamond Fort two starts back.

This quality son of Robin Des Champs is best when his stamina is tested and the six-year-old remains an exciting proposition having got back in the winners’ enclosure on Sunday.
