In a career which produced over 4,600 winners in Britain and 14 British Classic victories, it's fair to say Pat Eddery rode a few good horses during his 30 years in the saddle.

Compiling a shortlist of five from the top-class horses he rode in Britain, Ireland and around the globe, therefore, was a difficult task, with the likes of El Gran Senor, Rainbow Quest and Warning among those missing out.

But, following Eddery's death at the age of 63, we've come up with five of the best horses he partnered to big-race victories.

BOSRA SHAM

Eddery partnered the late Sir Henry Cecil filly to success in the Fillies' Mile on just her second start at Ascot in 1995. The following season, she won the Fred Darling before going on to a comprehensive success in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket. Bosra Sham didn't run again until September when she was second to Mark Of Esteem in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot on the day of Frankie Dettori's 'Magnificent Seven'. She again proved she could compete with the colts when beating the Dettori-ridden Halling in the Champion Stakes at Newmarket. Kieren Fallon took over for the start of Bosra Sham's four-year-old career, but Eddery was on board for her final start when she finished last of four behind Singspiel in the Juddmonte International at York.

DANCING BRAVE

Eddery initially got the leg-up on Dancing Brave when regular jockey Greville Starkey was injured for the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot in July 1986. Though Eddery possibly hit the front too soon, Dancing Brave proved strong enough to beat Shardari by three-quarters of a length, with the colt's Derby conqueror Shahrastani back in fourth. Arguably Eddery's most famous performance in the saddle came in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe when he held Dancing Brave up towards the rear before producing Guy Harwood's horse with a withering run down the centre of the track to win the race in a record time. Dancing Brave then finished fourth to Manila in the Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita.

GRUNDY

The Peter Walwyn-trained colt provided Eddery with his first Epsom Derby winner in 1975. The previous season, he had been rated by Timeform as the leading juvenile in Europe after winning the Dewhurst. After finishing second in both the Greenham and 2000 Guineas, Eddery partnered Grundy to victory in the Irish 2000 Guineas, the Derby and the Irish Derby before the classic meeting with Bustino in the King George at Ascot. In a phenomenal ding-dong battle in the home straight, Grundy showed class and guts to prevail in a record time which stood for 25 years in a race which will forever be remembered as one of the greatest in history.

PEBBLES

Eddery had ridden for Clive Brittain during his apprentice days and was on board the trainer's filly for her two finest moments. Pebbles had finished second in the 1984 Champion Stakes and, 12 months later, faced up to Palace Music again, while the field also contained Slip Anchor and Commanche Run. Held up by Eddery, Pebbles produced a stunning turn of foot and was not hard pressed to win. A few weeks later, she travelled to Aqueduct for the Breeders' Cup Turf and a first run over 12f. From a wide draw, she was again held up by Eddery before storming home to become the first British-trained horse to win a race at the Breeders' Cup.

ZAFONIC

A brilliant colt on his day, Zafonic won three Group 1 races as a juvenile, including when bolting up in the Dewhurst Stakes by four lengths. Though he was surprisingly beaten, albeit by a short head, by subsequent triple Group 1 winner Kingmambo on his reappearance as a three-year-old, Andre Fabre's colt still headed to the 2000 Guineas back at Newmarket as a short-priced favourite. There was never a moment's doubt as Zafonic showed an electric turn of foot to quicken away inside the final furlong to beat Barathea, who went on to win the Irish 2000 Guineas, by three-and-a-half lengths in a record time. Zafonic's only subsequent race came in the Sussex Stakes when he was only seventh to Bigstone at Glorious Goodwood after bursting a blood vessel.
