Retiring Dodging Bullets earns Nicholls praisePosted on Saturday 18th March 2017 @ 10.30

Paul Nicholls has praised the career of Dodging Bullets after the decision was taken to retire him from racing.

The nine-year-old was pulled up in Friday's Grand Annual at the Cheltenham Festival and shortly afterwards, connections decided to officially call time on the gelding's career.

Despite winning on his first three starts over fences, his career will be remembered for his brilliant second season chasing in 2014-15, a campaign that saw him take both the Tingle Creek and the Clarence House, before going on to claim the Queen Mother Champion Chase.

After seeing his results dwindle over the last year, trainer Nicholls confirmed the decision to retire him on Friday.

Despite the disappointment of his final run at the Festival, the Somerset handler says the horse will always be remembered for his successes.

Nicholls said: "Dodging Bullets was retired after his run on Friday. It was the right thing to do as we didn't want to see him just running down the field as he has been a legend.

"He came back safe and sound with his ears pricked which was the main thing.

"It was amazing he got to that pinnacle, he never really progressed after that and some horses do that. He has been a great horse to all concerned and they have been great owners (Martin Broughton and Friends) that had him."
